From City Hall to the Statehouse: The DSA's Growing Bench of Elected Officials

A decade ago, an openly socialist candidate winning a partisan office in America was a curiosity. Today it is a strategy. More than 100 DSA members now hold elected office across the country, and the count grows with each cycle.
The bench is concentrated where the organization is strongest. In New York, the NYC-DSA "Socialists in Office" bloc includes state senators Julia Salazar, Jabari Brisport, and Kristen Gonzalez, alongside a City Council contingent. In Illinois, the Chicago City Council's Democratic Socialist Caucus holds multiple wards. Pennsylvania, California, Massachusetts, Michigan, Washington, Oregon, and Minnesota each have DSA-affiliated legislators or local officials.
What distinguishes this from ordinary progressive politics is discipline. Endorsements come with expectations. Candidates are recruited, trained, and held to the platform. The result is a voting bloc that moves together — and a pipeline that runs from the school board and city council up to the statehouse.
We report this as a fact, not a scare. The point of The Overton Society is that these are elected, accountable officials with public records. You can look up each one, see the office, the party, and — where a citable roll-call exists — how they voted.
