Alex Lee and California's Social-Housing Push

By The Overton Society Editorial Board

Alex Lee and California's Social-Housing Push

Assemblymember Alex Lee (AD-24) is the only DSA member of the California Legislature — and one of its most active authors on the left. In 2025 he authored AB 11, the Social Housing Act, to create a public housing developer, and AB 1240 to bar large corporations from buying single-family homes.

AB 11 cleared the Assembly floor on June 2, 2025. Together the bills mark a clear direction: expanding the state's role in a market that has been overwhelmingly private.

We record the bills, the votes, and where Lee stands — sourced to the Assembly's own records.
